The Core of Religion, Art, and Faith
The Core of Religion, Art, and Faith When reading both the texts of Georges Bataille and Soren Kierkegaard, the reader is taken on an exploration of humanity. Although approached differently, this humanity is shown to be intimately intertwined with religion by both authors. Bataille studiously delves into the mind of the prehistoric man through his cave art in an attempt to understand and define what it means to be human. The art of this prehistoric man is the art of a consciousness at war with what it is and what it will become. It depicts a duality of identities. On one side the animalistic identity at one with nature and on the other side a creative rational identity that uses nature. This dual-meaning shown in the cave paintings lifts them to more than mere art. It is the visual first step in the transition from the simple to the complex. The cave art served as more than a creative outlet for our human ancestors. It held more of a ritualistic importance. They respected and loved t he animals they hunted but also degradingly used them as an instrument for personal survival.Bataille points out that it was in the ritual act of drawing the animal that the hunter created a spiritual connection. ââ¬Å"Everything points to the fact that the carvings or the paintings did not have meaning as permanent figures of a sanctuary in which rituals were celebrated. It seems that the execution of the paintingsââ¬âor the carvingââ¬âwas itself part of these rituals. . . The nascent[developing] image ensured the approach of the beast and the communication of the hunter with the hunted. â⬠(75)The animals on the cave walls possessed a divine strength in the eyes of prehistoric man and as a result the hunt, and the drawing of the hunt, were a religious experience. Perhaps even the first religious experiences. As a product of the previously mentioned duality present in prehistoric man, the hunter used art as a corporeal representation of their remorse towards their des ired prey. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ for the men of primitive times. . . the act of killing could also be shameful. Many primitive men ask for forgiveness beforehand for the evil that they are about to do to the animal they are pursuing. . For primitive human beings, the animal is not a thing. And this characterizes very broadly all of primitive humanity, for whom ordinary animality is rather divine. â⬠(Bataille 54-55) To Bataille, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ the world of understanding is to religion as the clarity of day is to the horror of the night. â⬠(122) Religion is an experience undefinable through direct words. This ââ¬Å"horror of the nightâ⬠is all that is not understood; it is the undefinable, the intangible, the experience that lacks rationality and is based instead on feeling. It is how we explain and give meaning; it is the answer to the unanswerable questions that man has. Religion and art are intertwined in that they are both chaotic tools used by man to gain order over the chaotic horrors of the night. Kierkegaard, on the other hand, arrives at religion through the avenues of faith. To Kierkegaard, the man Abraham in the Bible is the perfect model of religious faith, the very first case in history of a man of pure faith, or as he calls it, a knight of faith.Faith is similar to Batailleââ¬â¢s idea of art and religion in that it can not be clearly defined through words. Faith is an experience; it is the idea that a single individual can have a one-on-one relationship with God that transcends the ethical. Abraham was faced with the dilemma of sacrificing his only son Isaac. Ethically and morally this would be labeled as murder, but through faith it is an absolute duty. This absolute duty is not something that can be shared, it is a private struggle, it is a solitary path to follows Godââ¬â¢s command without remorse or doubt..It is only moments before the murder and sacrifice of Isaac that God stops Abraham and directs him to a ram instead. Through faith, ethics and morality become an entirely different thing. ââ¬Å"He who loves God without faith reflects upon himself; he who loves God in faith reflects upon God. â⬠(Kierkegaard 37) Godââ¬â¢s will is the only correct way; what he asks is what will be done even if it goes against what society says is right. The man of the world, or ethical man, follows a different code of conduct. He is moral through and through and has a universal duty to others. He follows the laws and commandments of God for the good of everybody around him. His actions are dictated by cultural norms and given meaning by religious institutions. He is understood and buoyed by his peers. This is precisely the opposite of the knight of faith. Abraham has to do what is ethically wrong to do what is absolutely right in the eyes of God. Both art and faith are passionate pathways connecting with the divine. They give humanity a structure in that they give meaning to our emotions and guidance to our actions . Faith is a marvel, and yet no human being is excluded from it; for that which unites all human life is passion, and faith is passion. â⬠(Kierkegaard 67) Faith was Abrahams way of expressing the inexpressible duty he felt toward God, just as art was the expression of prehistoric man inexpressible connection with the animal. 3 Types of Recommendation Letters
A recommendation letter is a written reference that offers information about your character. Recommendation letters may include details about your personality, work ethic, community involvement, and/or academic achievements. Recommendation letters are used by many people for many different occasions. There are three basic categories or recommendation letters: academic recommendations, employment recommendations, and character recommendations. Here is an overview of each type of recommendation letter along with information on who uses them and why. Academic Recommendation Letters Academic letters of recommendation are typically used by students during the admissions process. During admissions, most schoolsââ¬âundergraduate and graduate alikeââ¬âexpect to see at least one, preferably two or three, recommendation letters for each applicant. Recommendation letters provide admission committees with information that may or may not be found in a college application, including academic and work achievements, character references, and personal details. Scholarship and fellowship programs usually ask for recommendations, as well. Students might request recommendations from former teachers, principals, deans, coaches, and other education professionals who are familiar with the students academic experience or extracurricular achievements. Other recommenders may include employers, community leaders, or mentors. Employment Recommendations Letters of recommendation for employment and career references are a major tool of individuals who are trying to get a new job. Recommendations can be put on a website, sent in with a resume, supplied when an application is filled out, used as part of a portfolio, or handed out during employment interviews. Most employers ask job candidates for at least three career references. Therefore, its a good idea for job seekers to have at least three recommendation letters on hand. Generally, employment recommendation letters include information about employment history, job performance, work ethic, and personal accomplishments. The letters are usually written by former (or current employers) or a direct supervisor. Coworkers are also acceptable, but not as desirable as employers or supervisors. Job applicants who do not have enough formal work experience to secure recommendations from an employer or supervisor should seek recommendations from community or volunteer organizations. Academic mentors are also an option. Character References Character recommendations or character references are often used for housing accommodations, legal situations, child adoption, and other similar situations where understanding a persons character is important. Almost everyone needs this type of recommendation letter at some point in their life. These recommendation letters are often written by former employers, landlords, business associates, neighbors, doctors, acquaintances, etc. The most appropriate person varies depending on what the letter of recommendation will be used for. Asking For a Recommendation Letter You should never wait until the last minute to get a recommendation letter. It is important to give your letter writers time to craft a useful letter that will make the right impression. Start seeking academic recommendations at least two months before you need them. Employment recommendations can be collected throughout your work life. Before you leave a job, ask your employer or supervisor for a recommendation. You should try to get a recommendation from every supervisor you have worked for. You should also get recommendation letters from landlords, people you pay money to, and people you do business with so that you have character references on hand should you ever need them.

Experience Told Through Charlotte Perkinss Writing Essay
Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrought The Yellow Wallpaper while she was recovering from her depression. She had suffered from the depression and to describe what she went through, she wrote the short story to describe her own experiences. The main treatment she was treated with, and the character in the short story were treated with, was the rest cure. In which it would last about six to eight weeks, which involved isolation from friends and family. In the story she is isolated for the most part when they are staying away from home for the summer months. In The Yellow Wallpaper the narrator and her husband John have gone to a secluded estate, which they are renting for the summer. According to the Science Museum treatments that the narrator goes through are formulated for her type of situation by Silas Weir Mitchell that cured certain diseases and conditions. The treatment was for neurasthenia which is a medical condition characterized by: fatigue, headache, irritability, anxiety, and depressed mood; also hysteria which is an exaggerated or uncontrollable emotion. The rest cure would have a duration of six to eight weeks as a general time frame. It would isolate patients from contact with their friends and family for an extended period of time; also could be prohibited from talking, reading, writing, etc. Some patients sometimes had to be forced fed if it were needed, which would make them seem like they were an infant. Most cases they would be in hospitals with nurses cleaning them and feeding them; also the doctor would massage and use electrotherapy to keep their m uscles. Over time things have changed in the way that we treat people that suffer from some of these conditions though prescription drugs. Today Doctors have a

Successfulness of Rebates Successful discount or rebate programs can empower an organization. A successful rebate program must have a perceived notion of value in order to attract consumers. Rebate programs typically work best with durable goods and higher ticket items. If the value of the rebate is considered high, then the chances of redemption will be undoubtedly greater (Dennin, 2012). In a competitive business environment, incentives such as rebates can provide a business with a much needed sales advantage. Rebates can increase customer satisfaction, build customer loyalty, and encourage customers to try new products. There are many factors that can affect the success rate of a rebate program (Inmar, 2011). Inmar suggests that these factors indeed affect the success rate of a rebate program: â⬠¢ The value of a rebate; â⬠¢ The time and effort required to redeem the rebate; â⬠¢ The complexity of the rebate requirements; â⬠¢ The consumerââ¬â¢s previous experience with rebates; â⬠¢ The brandââ¬â¢s presence It is reported that almost 50% of retailers and 48% of manufacturers use rebates programs as part of their customer loyalty and promotions mix (Group, 2011). Stefanââ¬â¢s Diaries The Craving Chapter 12 Free Essays
The next few days drifted by, chock-full of wedding planning and menu sampling. At night, the Sutherlands settled into a steady routine. Mrs. We will write a custom essay sample on Stefanââ¬â¢s Diaries: The Craving Chapter 12 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Sutherland took to the sewing room, teaching Lydia to make quilts and bonnets. Bridget indulged in a late-night beauty regime that involved brushing her hair in one hundred strokes and lathering herself in cream that I could smell all the way from the parlor. Winfield always retired to his study with a tumbler of brandy, perusing the paper or going over his accounting books. Iââ¬â¢d taken to pacing the first floor, coming up with plans to ferry the Sutherlands to safety only to shoot down most of my ideas. I also now needed to plan my feedings. My steady diet of city animals was harder to keep up now that I was under the watchful eye of every Sutherland and servant. It was almost like they expected me to try and make a break for it, though it was impossible to know how much of that was genuine wariness versus Damon compelling them to follow me. Sometimes I managed to slip away, whether up to the roof or silently down to the backyard to try and find a rat or pigeon or even a mouse to satisfy my needs. Hazel, the house cat, was off limits of course, but fortunately her wild tomcat friends were not. Damon had no such nutritional problems. Nor did he care much about secrecy. He came and went as he pleased, doing God knows what in the darkest corners of the city. I often saw a maid or manservant summoned to his suite in the coldest hours of the night as I skulked about tending to my own needs. For my brother, life with the Sutherlands was like living in a grand hotel ââ¬â he attended dinners in his honor and was feted all around town at the top establishments. He was a prince and New York was his adoring kingdom. When Damon arrived home on Thursday, Winfield poked his head out of the study. ââ¬Å"Oh, good. Iââ¬â¢m glad youââ¬â¢re here,â⬠Winfield said, holding out two glasses of whiskey. ââ¬Å"Please come join me.â⬠There was a stray drop of blood carelessly smeared on the corner of Damonââ¬â¢s mouth. Anyone else would have assumed it was a shaving cut. Suddenly the cozy study seemed suffocating and the corners darker. Damon casually wiped his lips, his eyes on me, then threw himself down on the couch next to his future father-in-law, less like an Italian count and more likeâ⬠¦ well, Damon. ââ¬Å"Good evening, sir.â⬠The fact that he dropped his fake accent in their presence highlighted just how under his thrall this family was. ââ¬Å"I wanted to have a chat with the two of you about your futures,â⬠Winfield began, chomping on his cigar. ââ¬Å"Oh, I have big plans, Iââ¬â¢m thinking long-term,â⬠Damon said. ââ¬Å"Living here with the family, of course. I love close kin.â⬠My throat went dry and I ran a hand through my hair, beginning to panic, reminded once again that I had no idea what Damon really wanted. ââ¬Å"I think I should like to go into business for myself,â⬠Damon began to say. But then the door of the study slammed open and Margaret came striding in. ââ¬Å"Papa!â⬠Without a word to either of us she threw a copy of the dayââ¬â¢s Post down into her fatherââ¬â¢s hands and tapped at an article. ââ¬Å"Read this.â⬠Winfield fished around in his pockets for his glasses and slid them on, peering at the paper. ââ¬Å"Sutherland house is scandalized as two penniless suitors sweep away the last of the eligible Sutherland girls. Heartbroken sons of bankers, politicians, and empires of capital complain bitterly about the sudden move. Is it blackmail, some wonder? An unnamed source close to the family claims thatâ⬠¦ Oh, rubbish,â⬠he said, throwing the paper aside and taking off his glasses. ââ¬Å"People talk about the silliest things.â⬠ââ¬Å"We will be ruined,â⬠Margaret said, almost pleading. She completely ignored Damonââ¬â¢s and my presence. ââ¬Å"At the very least, canââ¬â¢t you see how it would be bad for business?â⬠ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t you think you should leave that sort of talk for the menfolk?â⬠Damon asked lazily, returning to his accented English. But his ice-blue eyes bored straight into her head, as if he wished he could put a bullet there. I stood up, placing myself between Margaret and him. She didnââ¬â¢t seem to notice his hatred, or the danger she was in. ââ¬Å"I understand your concerns,â⬠I said quickly. I had to convince her to drop this, for her own sake. ââ¬Å"But believe me, I want nothing but the best for your family.â⬠ââ¬Å"And in fact, we menfolk were just talking about business,â⬠Winfield added. ââ¬Å"Damon, you were saying?â⬠ââ¬Å"All I need is a small sum of cash,â⬠my brother said, turning his head and effectively cutting Margaret out of the conversation. ââ¬Å"Which will allow me to travel to my home country and start picking out vendors for exportsâ⬠¦.â⬠Margaret let out a gasp. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re not actually thinking of giving him more than his dowry?â⬠ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t be greedy, pet,â⬠Winfield said, shushing her with a patronizing gesture. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s just seed money to get him on his wayâ⬠¦.â⬠ââ¬Å"Have you gone crazy?â⬠she demanded. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t even know this man. Let him work for you first. Or give him one of your smaller businesses to run.â⬠Damon rose from his seat, coldly furious. I tried to take Margaretââ¬â¢s arm, but she shook me off. She pulled herself up to her full height, staring straight back into his eyes.
